Newsies: Broadway Theater Production
Harvey Fierstein Newsies was a musical made in 1992 based on the newspaper strike in 1899 in New York. Most of the paper boys were poor, to begin with, and didn't make much money, but when the paper company raised the price for the paper bundles, that pushed them to the edge so they went on strike.
Newsies the musical is about a young man named Jack, his friend Crutchy and his girlfriend Katherine Plumber. Jack and his friend Crutchy sold papers, but when paper owners raised the price of the bundle's Jack and his friends who couldn't afford to pay the price increase decided to start a union and strike. After the decision to strike, Jack meets a reporter and asks her to report on their cause and she does, later becoming Jack’s girlfriend. There wasn’t just one paper owner who raised the prices, it went up all over New York. Newsies from Manhattan, Brooklyn and the Bronx all got together and went on strike.
Newsies is a great theatre production filled with tons of catchy songs that will get stuck in your head.
